Can you tell us a bit about your journey and what brought you to TRG?

My tyre fitting career began in 2020 when I completed a comprehensive five-week training program aligned with trainee development requirements at my previous company. Following the successful completion of this program, I mobilised to site to commence my career as a Trainee Tyre Fitter.

I spent the first two years of my career at Mesa A, where I progressed through my traineeship, attained my Certificate II qualification, and developed into a senior fitter within the team. During this time, I was entrusted with mentoring and developing new trainees, which provided valuable early leadership experience and helped shape my approach to team development.

Driven by a desire to broaden my skills and challenge myself professionally, I sought a transfer to West Angelas. This move proved to be a pivotal step in my development, exposing me to new operational environments, challenges, and leadership opportunities. After adapting to the site and building strong working relationships, I was offered the opportunity to act in a Leading Hand capacity before securing a permanent Leading Hand position within six months of arriving at West Angelas.

A significant influence on my development during this period was Brendan Williams, now a fellow TRG Supervisor, who was my supervisor at West Angelas. Brendan played a key role in accelerating my leadership growth by providing hands-on exposure to senior leadership responsibilities and encouraging me to take ownership of operational outcomes.

After 12 months as a Leading Hand, I was encouraged to apply for a vacant Supervisor position. I was fortunate to be appointed as Site Supervisor at Gudai-Darri, where I spent the next 12 months further developing my leadership capability and operational experience. Following this period, I was invited back to West Angelas as Site Supervisor to fill the position vacated by Brendan after his transition to TRG.

The opportunity to join TRG as a Supervisor was particularly appealing, not only because it provided the chance to work alongside a respected mentor once again, but also because of the organisation’s vision and growth ambitions. The direction that Allan and Kenton had established for TRG, together with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to that journey, strongly aligned with my own professional aspirations.

What are your main responsibilities in your current role at TRG?

My primary responsibility as a TRG Supervisor is to provide leadership and oversight of daily operations, ensuring work activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with client expectations. This includes work management and planning, client engagement, workforce leadership, compliance, and the ongoing promotion of a strong safety culture.

The role requires balancing multiple priorities while maintaining operational performance and supporting the development of team members. As a supervisor, I must be adaptable to changing operational demands, effectively manage resources, and ensure the team remains aligned with business objectives and operational outcomes. Success in the role relies on strong communication, decision-making, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to lead by example while fostering a positive and high-performing work environment.

How would you describe your leadership style?

I believe my leadership style is centred around a people-first approach. I strive to build trust within my team by empowering individuals to perform within their capabilities, make informed decisions, and think critically when faced with challenges. I encourage ownership and accountability by giving team members the confidence and autonomy to execute their responsibilities while providing the support and guidance they need to succeed.

I consider myself approachable and accessible, fostering an environment where open communication and constructive discussion are encouraged. I believe strong teams are built on mutual respect, trust, and engagement. At the same time, I ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities and the standards expected of them, particularly in relation to safety, compliance, and operational performance.

What approaches do you take to develop a positive and productive team environment?

By balancing support with accountability, I aim to create a culture where people feel valued, empowered, and confident to perform at their best while achieving positive outcomes for both the team and the business.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I faced when stepping into a supervisory role was transitioning from leading a team of four people to managing a team of eight. While people are undoubtedly our greatest asset, they can also present some of the most complex challenges due to varying levels of experience, differing perspectives, personalities, and levels of maturity.

Successfully leading a diverse team requires the ability to adapt your approach, remain relatable to all individuals, and create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported. Building alignment around shared goals, fostering positive behaviours, and developing a strong team culture takes time, consistency, and effective communication.

How do you stay updated with industry trends and innovations?

I stay informed of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices by actively engaging with my colleagues, leveraging their knowledge and experience, and maintaining a strong commitment to continuous learning. I also take every opportunity to engage with OEM representatives when they are onsite, whether they are tyre manufacturers, tooling providers, or equipment specialists. These interactions provide valuable insights into new innovations, product developments, and industry-leading practices.

What are your personal and professional growth goals at TRG?

My personal growth goal is to further establish and refine my identity as a leader, gaining a deeper understanding of the leader I aspire to be both professionally and personally. I want my leadership values and behaviours to extend beyond the workplace and be reflected in how I am perceived by my peers, family, and those around me.

Professionally, I am committed to continuous learning and development, with the goal of becoming the best leader and supervisor I can be. I actively seek opportunities to challenge myself, expand my knowledge, and contribute to the ongoing success of the business. I am fortunate to be surrounded by highly experienced and knowledgeable leaders and colleagues, and I see great value in learning from their experiences, seeking their guidance, and leveraging their insights to further develop my leadership capabilities.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to take on a management role in this industry?

My advice to anyone stepping into a leadership role is to invest time in building strong relationships with your people. Take a step back and observe the operation as it currently exists before making changes, gaining a solid understanding of the team, processes, and culture.

Identify where your strengths can add the most value and positively contribute to the team’s success. Every day presents an opportunity to learn, improve, and reset. Remain adaptable and open to change, as operational environments are constantly evolving. However, while circumstances may change, your core values should remain consistent.

How do you manage work-life balance in a demanding role?

Fortunately, my roster provides a healthy work-life balance, and there is a high level of trust with the onsite leadership team when I am away. This allows me to step back, switch off, and be fully present with my family and personal commitments throughout most of my R&R.

To ensure a smooth transition back into work, I typically spend a day or two before returning to site reviewing emails, identifying key messages, and prioritising important updates and notices. This preparation allows me to return informed, organised, and ready to hit the ground running, while maintaining a balance between being available to the business and making the most of my time away from site.

How do you envision your role evolving as TRG continues to grow and succeed?

At my current site, I see my role continuing to evolve, particularly in the areas of fleet planning and scheduling. This involves making informed decisions around asset maintenance requirements while balancing client expectations for equipment availability and ensuring we remain within agreed fleet downtime targets. As operations become increasingly data-driven, the ability to effectively plan, prioritise, and optimise maintenance activities will be critical to achieving both operational and business objectives.

With TRG continuing to expand, there are also exciting opportunities to contribute to business improvement initiatives. I am particularly interested in supporting the development of better processes and systems that enhance how we capture work, measure performance, track safety outcomes, and utilise data to drive decision-making. I believe there is significant potential for TRG to lead the industry in operational excellence through innovation, standardisation, and the effective use of technology.

Personally, I will continue investing in my own development by learning from those around me, seeking new challenges, and broadening my operational and leadership capabilities. My goal is to ensure I am well prepared to take advantage of future opportunities within TRG as the company continues to grow, expand its workforce, and strengthen its position within the industry.
