Brendan Williams talks about Leadership, Mentorship, and What Drives Him After 23 Years in Tyres
In this month’s Meet the TRG Team, we’re proud to introduce Brendan Williams—one of our experienced team leaders who brings over 23 years of industry knowledge and a genuine passion for supporting others.
Brendan’s journey started as a tyre technician and led him through leadership roles across major mine sites in WA. Now at TRG, he’s focused on mentoring the next generation, strengthening client relationships, and promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your journey and what brought you to TRG?
I’ve spent over 23 years in the tyre industry, with the last 13 years focused on tyre management and heavy equipment maintenance in the mining sector. My journey began as a tyre technician, then progressed to leading hand, and eventually supervisor on Rio Tinto mine sites in Western Australia. Each role has shaped my commitment to safety, strong leadership, and high operational standards.
What brought me to TRG was the opportunity to be part of something meaningful—helping shape the future for the next generation of tyre technicians. I really value how TRG supports its people, especially those on the ground. Their focus on growth, development, and long-term impact aligns perfectly with my own values.
What truly stood out to me, though, was TRG’s business model—a tyre management company built for fitters. That approach was the real selling point. It shows a genuine understanding of the challenges and needs of those doing the work, and I’m proud to be part of a team that puts its people first. I’m excited to contribute to TRG’s ongoing success.
2. What are your main responsibilities in your current role at TRG?
In my role at TRG, I’m responsible for leading day-to-day operations with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and team performance. I coordinate personnel to carry out tyre fitting and workshop maintenance in a safe and cost-effective manner, while providing ongoing feedback and initiatives to support continuous improvement.
I ensure all safety systems are in place, lead by example in upholding company policies and procedures, and promote a strong safety culture aimed at zero harm. I also manage tyre diagnostics, performance tracking, and change-out scheduling, while working closely with clients to ensure high-quality service and minimal downtime.
When I was around 30 years old, I transitioned into the OTR sector and have been there enjoying it ever since.
3. How would you describe your leadership style?
I’d describe my leadership style as collaborative and service-oriented. My main focus is supporting and empowering my team to succeed safely and efficiently. I coach, mentor, and guide the team to help them develop their skills and build confidence.
I believe in open communication and building trust so everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and concerns. I encourage independent decision-making while being available for support when needed. This approach helps us grow together and maintain a strong safety-first culture. Ultimately, I want every team member to feel valued, empowered, and motivated to contribute to our shared success.
4. What approaches do you take to develop a positive and productive team environment?
To build a positive and productive team, I focus on clear communication, mutual respect, and continuous development. I ensure everyone understands expectations and encourage open feedback through regular safety briefings and informal chats.
I strive to create an environment where team members feel valued and comfortable sharing ideas, fostering ownership and accountability. I also prioritise ongoing training and provide resources to support both professional and personal growth, keeping the team motivated and ready for new challenges.
5. What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role, and how did you overcome them?
The biggest and most rewarding challenge in my role is working with people. Every team member brings unique strengths, perspectives, and sometimes difficulties. The key is connecting with them, communicating effectively, and aligning everyone towards a common goal.
I overcome these challenges by actively listening and empathising to understand each individual’s needs and motivations. I maintain open communication and foster a culture of trust and respect, which helps resolve conflicts and encourages collaboration. A clear, shared vision keeps us focused and moving forward together.
By building strong relationships and addressing issues proactively, I help create a cohesive and motivated team. This not only overcomes challenges but also strengthens our bond and sense of achievement.
6. What initiatives have you implemented to support your team’s professional development?
One of the most rewarding initiatives I’ve led was developing a leadership development plan with my previous employer, which was rolled out across the business. The goal was to identify and nurture potential leaders by equipping them with the skills and opportunities to grow into senior roles.
As a result, two of my trainees became Superintendents—one even became my direct Superintendent, which was a proud moment. Over the years, I’ve mentored more than 15 individuals who progressed into supervisory and leadership roles. I’m still in touch with many of them, and we continue to support each other’s careers.
I believe in providing clear career pathways and the right mix of training, mentorship, and support. This benefits not just individuals, but the whole team and the business overall.
7. How do you stay updated with industry trends and innovations?
I stay informed through a mix of sources. LinkedIn is a key tool—I use it to connect with peers, follow industry leaders, and engage with news and discussions. I also maintain strong relationships with suppliers, who often provide insight into new technologies and best practices.
Social media and online resources like blogs, webinars, and industry reports help me stay across emerging trends. I’m especially interested in innovations that improve safety, efficiency, and ergonomics in high-risk jobs. If I come across something that can make my team’s work easier or safer, I’m quick to explore it and apply it where possible.
8. What exciting developments or projects are you currently working on?
Right now, I’m focused on strengthening team and client relationships at Roy Hill. This is my first swing on this site, and it’s been both exciting and challenging—almost like being a new starter again. It’s a fresh chapter and I’m enjoying the process so far.
I’m focused on building strong connections with both the team and our clients, ensuring open communication and meeting safety and operational goals. I’m also learning from the unique challenges of the site and finding ways to improve collaboration and efficiency.
9. What are your personal and professional growth goals at TRG?
My personal and professional goals at TRG go hand in hand. Professionally, I aim to use my experience to lift team performance and help set new industry standards. I’m committed to sharing knowledge and mentoring others so they have the tools to succeed.
Personally, I’m focused on continual learning, particularly around new technologies and innovative practices. I want to pass that knowledge on and help position TRG as a leader in tyre management by building a culture of safety, efficiency, and growth.
10. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to take on a management role in this industry?
My advice: have a plan, set clear goals, and be patient. You need a strong foundation built on experience and knowledge—this takes time. Learn every part of the job, build your technical expertise, and get to know the industry inside and out.
Also, focus on people. Take care of your team, and they’ll take care of the work. Leadership is more than managing tasks—it’s about building trust, fostering relationships, and creating a workplace where people feel supported and valued.
11. How do you mentor and support your team members to reach their full potential?
I mentor by being honest, respectful, and supportive. I challenge my team to think independently, ask questions, and problem-solve—because that’s where growth happens.
I don’t just give answers; I guide people to find them. I believe this builds confidence and helps them develop real capability. Trust and integrity are key—when people feel safe to try, fail, and learn, they grow stronger and more capable.
12. How do you manage work-life balance in a demanding role?
It’s definitely a challenge, especially living in South Australia and working in WA. At one point, I felt like I was spending more time in airports than with my family, and that took a toll.
One of the things I value most about TRG is the support for interstate workers. The family-friendly 2-and-2 even-time roster has made a huge difference. It allows me to be more present at home, which benefits my personal life and makes me more focused when I’m on shift.
13. What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?
Outside of work, life revolves around my family. I have four daughters and a wonderful wife, and most weekends are spent on the sidelines of sporting events, cheering them on.
We live on a small hobby farm with horses, cattle, and two sausage dogs, so there’s always something to do. In my downtime, I enjoy fishing, shooting, and splitting wood with the family. The best moments are when we’re all around the fire, roasting marshmallows. Those are the memories I treasure most.
14. How do you envision your role evolving as TRG continues to grow and succeed?
If the opportunity comes up, I’d like to take on broader leadership responsibilities—supporting the business in strategic areas like client engagement, industry partnerships, and long-term planning.
I’m passionate about developing pathways for the next generation of tyre technicians and creating a workplace where they feel supported and valued. My goal is to help TRG become the benchmark, not just for performance, but for how we grow and support our people.
